$p$-elementary non-cyclic subgroups of the Cremona group of the plane

The Cremona group is the group of all invertible algebraic transformations of the plane that can be described by rational functions, a central object of study in algebraic geometry. This paper focuses on classifying certain finite subgroups of this group, specifically those built from copies of the cyclic group of prime order p, meaning groups where every element, applied p times, returns to the identity. The main result is a complete classification, up to symmetry, of all such subgroups that contain at least two independent copies of this cyclic group. A key finding is that these groups cannot be too large: at most two copies if p is 5 or bigger, at most three if p equals 3, and at most four if p equals 2.

The classification is made concrete by listing 20 explicit families of such subgroups, coming from two natural sources: the de Jonquieres group, which consists of transformations preserving a family of lines, and automorphism groups of del Pezzo surfaces, which are special well-studied algebraic surfaces. The paper also carefully analyzes when subgroups from different families are actually equivalent to one another via a change of coordinates, which is the natural notion of sameness in this setting. As a bonus, the authors extend some of their results to the case where the field being worked over has the same prime characteristic as the group order, a more subtle situation that requires separate
