De Rham-Betti Groups of Some Abelian Fourfolds

The paper studies a mathematical object called the de Rham-Betti group, which is a symmetry group attached to a geometric object known as an abelian variety. Abelian varieties are higher-dimensional generalizations of elliptic curves, which are themselves fundamental objects in number theory and geometry. The de Rham-Betti group captures how two different ways of measuring the "shape" of an abelian variety, one algebraic and one topological, relate to each other. A closely related and better-understood object is the Mumford-Tate group, which encodes symmetries coming from Hodge theory. A central open question in the field is whether these two groups are always equal, and the paper makes progress on this question for a specific class of four-dimensional abelian varieties defined over the algebraic numbers.

The varieties studied here have a special property called complex multiplication, or CM, meaning their symmetry algebras are unusually large and structured. The paper focuses on two families: simple CM abelian fourfolds, and abelian fourfolds whose CM field has degree four over the rationals. For both families, the author proves that the de Rham-Betti group equals the Mumford-Tate group, confirming the expected equality in these cases.

Because the internal structure of de Rham-Betti groups is much less understood than that of Mumford-Tate groups, standard techniques for computing the latter do not directly apply. Instead, the author uses a combination of tools: results from Gross and from Chudnovsky, an analysis of Galois symmetries, and constraints coming from the existence of polarizations, which are geometric structures that impose positivity conditions. Together these tools allow the author to rule out candidate subgroups one by one until the de Rham-Betti group is pinned down.
