Critical Free-Energy Variance in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model

The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model is a mathematical model of a spin glass, a disordered magnetic material where interactions between atoms are random and competing. Physicists and mathematicians use it as a benchmark for understanding complex systems with randomness and frustration. A central quantity is the free energy, which roughly measures the total thermodynamic behavior of the system. Understanding how much the free energy fluctuates from one random realization of the disorder to another is important for characterizing the phase transition that occurs at a critical temperature.

This paper derives a precise bound on the variance of the free energy at the critical point of the SK model. The key result is an exact mathematical identity relating that variance to a quantity called the spin-glass susceptibility, which measures how sensitive the system is to small perturbations and diverges near the phase transition. The identity is derived using a clever interpolation technique that smoothly connects two versions of the disorder, allowing the authors to track how the free energy changes. Depending on how fast the susceptibility grows with system size, the variance can be pinned down with different levels of sharpness. Using a recently proved result about how the susceptibility scales at criticality, they obtain the tightest possible coefficient, showing the bound is not just an upper bound but is in fact sharp.

The broader significance is that this gives a rigorous, self-contained understanding of how the free energy concentrates around its mean right at the critical temperature, a notoriously difficult regime. Away from the critical point, at high temperatures, free energy concentration had been well understood for a long time. The critical point is harder because fluctuations are larger and the usual tools weaken. By connecting the variance directly to the susceptibility through an exact identity, the paper provides a clean and principled framework that could be useful for analyzing other mean-field spin glass models near their critical points.
