The paper introduces SC(kappa), a combinatorial principle asserting the existence of well-behaved collections of elementary substructures of a given mathematical object. Such side condition principles have historically been used in forcing constructions to build generic extensions satisfying certain combinatorial properties. The open problem is whether SC(kappa) at various cardinals kappa carries independent implications for cardinal arithmetic, cofinalities, or the behavior of cardinal invariants beyond what is already derivable from established forcing axioms such as PFA, MM, or their bounded variants. In particular, it is unclear whether SC(kappa) can be separated from these classical axioms in terms of its consequences for the arithmetic of infinite cardinals.
